Hawthornden Castle (left) has a colorful history, with parts of the building dating back to the 15th century. It was sold to Drue Heinz in the 1970s, and in the early 1980s was turned into a writers retreat. Past Hawthornden Fellows have included such well-known writers as Helen Vendler, Robert Morgan, Maurya Simon and Ian Rankin. Photo by Vic Sharp, Edinburgh, Scotland |
