Acknowledgements - Issue 4
Stone Canoe Number 4 is dedicated to Hayden Carruth, distinguished American poet, who taught at Syracuse University from 1979 to 1991, and continued to live in the Upstate town of Munnsville until his death in September of 2008. Author of more than 30 books of poetry, as well as several important books of prose and criticism, he won the National Book Award in 1996 for Scrambled Eggs and Whiskey. Beloved by colleagues and revered as a teacher by his students in the Syracuse Creative Writing Program, he had a genuine eye for what he called “authentic” voices, and always worked to free his own work of all cant and affectation. Featured in this issue are four of Carruth’s later unpublished poems, as well as a poem dedicated to him by Brooks Haxton, a distinguished poet in his own right and a student of Hayden’s at Syracuse.
